Leaders in Geriatric Care and Education
Our faculty are experienced geriatricians. We train physicians for Iowa and beyond to be leaders in patient-centered, team-based care delivery, and to meet the unique health care needs of older adults.
Our fellows are driven to rewarding and meaningful careers in the practice of geriatric medicine.
Our patients are the most important part of our fellowship training! They come to UI Health Care to receive the very best care from experts who are passionate and personable. As Iowa’s only academic medical center, we see a comprehensive mix of cases in our Geriatric Health Assessment Clinic, particularly patients with significant medical and psychosocial complexity.

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"In geriatrics, when guidelines run out and evidence is unclear, we’re guided by what matters most to our patients."
Rick Dobyns, MD MPH, MSc
Family and Community Medicine
Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"The morbidity is high, medical pragmatism is more relevant and individualization."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"I enjoy the flexibility and complexity of caring for the elderly. The focus of patient centered care is very gratifying. The stories are wonderful."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"I chose geriatric medicine because I enjoy working with patients and their families to address the unique challenges associated with aging, and to helpolder adults "age well". I find managing medical complexity to be very intellectually satisfying. I also love the team aspect of care in geriatric clinic, where we work closely with pharmacists and a social worker to provide highly individualized care to our patients."
Samuel Orvis, MD

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"Geriatrics is specialty that values a patient-centered approach. Geriatric patients often accumulate many complex diseases that require nuanced medical management, but this is always balanced by a patient's own goals for their care. Finding this balance is a rewarding challenge that nourishes my passion for this specialty."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"I love the challenges and rewards that come from working with older patients. In a single day, I care for a broad range of patient issues, from simple things like injecting joints and treating skin conditions to difficult conversations about dementia diagnoses and end-of-life decisions."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"Geriatrics allows me to practice at the highest level I can as a clinical pharmacist because of the great heterogeneity in the patients - one size does not fit all, so everything needs individualized goals and treatment plans. You can learn a lot about yourself and life working with older adults."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"I've enjoyed working with the geriatric population since I was in high school working in my Uncle's community pharmacy. As I progressed through my formal training, it became evident that the team-based approach in the University of Iowa geriatric clinic was where I wanted to spend a significant amount of my clinical time. I'm able to establish really strong relationships with the patients in our Geriatric Assessment Clinic, which is one of the most rewarding parts of my clinical duties. I also really enjoy the educational mission of the clinic where I am able to help educate pharmacy students, medical students, physician's assistant students, medical, pharmacy and PA residents, and geriatric fellows."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"As a pharmacist, there are so many medications that need to be adjusted or should no longer be used in the geriatric population. I think it is extremely important to continue to evaluate the patient's medication regimen to assure patient safety and quality of life as our patients age. I also enjoy the multidisciplinary teams that are required to care for this set of patients."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"I enjoy working in Geriatrics because it allows me to make a meaningful and direct impact on patient care, particularly through addressing complex medication issues such as polypharmacy. The clinic environment is especially rewarding, as it offers opportunities to build in-depth, long-term relationships with patients. I also appreciate how engaged and grateful many of our patients are. They truly value having a pharmacist as part of their care team, which makes the work even more fulfilling."

Why did you choose Geriatrics as your field of practice?
"It's not clear cut. This population has many needs but are rarely included in research and guidelines. We're taught in school about longevity and little focus is on safety and function. Geriatrics is a gray area."
