Is the APP residency in Iowa City or do you have to travel?

The residency is entirely in Iowa City area unless you participate in the Wilderness Medicine rotation.

What does the calendar look like (start date, end date)?

Start dates based on date of application submission. Generally starting about 3 months after interviewing to allow for credentialing.

What are the typical hours?

  • Outpatient: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. plus whatever time you need for charting/patient follow up.
  • Inpatient: Monday-Saturday, daily hours vary.

Do you work any call, nights, weekends, or holidays?

No call or weekends or holidays except as noted above about inpatient.

What does the workload look like? How many patients per day?

You start with 4 patients per half-day clinic session and work up to 8.

What does the education/lecture component entail?

  • Academic Half Day: Weekly for 4 hours
  • Geriatric Journal Club: Monthly
  • Chronic Disease/Community Medicine Block: 2 separate 2-week blocks

When do you interview and how many are accepted into the program?

We interview for 1 position twice yearly. Interviews are held virtually, are approximately 2 hours in length, and include a program overview.

Our location

We are located at 2751 Northgate Drive in Iowa City. The 33,000 square foot space includes a large primary care clinic with 41 exam rooms, along with dedicated lab and research areas, administrative offices, and space for the Family Medicine Residency Program. The clinic provides convenient community access just minutes from Interstate 80.
